Stiles Family Reveal

Our plan to share the news with the Stiles was to wait until our family birthday dinner on June 6th. Everyone planned to be there to celebrate Rick & Kathy's birthdays, and we thought this would be the perfect time to share our good news. However, once we told my parents, waiting another week & a half seemed like a REALLY long time.

So, when we got a phone call asking if we could have dinner on Friday (June 1st), we immediately agreed to attend! Dan & Kayla were both going to be there, along with our good friends Preston & Rachel. We all had a wonderful dinner together- Rick got to test out his new grill! We sang "Happy Birthday" and had some delicious cake. And after dinner, we gave them our gifts. We got Kathy a pair of sweet little white baby shoes with little grey bears. And we got Rick a baby Cubs hat! Of course, we got their reaction on video. I love it!!

It feels so good to finally have our news "public". We're still waiting until our second trimester to really publicize things. But we it's good to have all of our family in on the secret now. Everyone has been so excited and supportive. Our baby is already so loved & cherished. I cannot wait to meet him or her!

Spehr Family Reveal

The first of our two big reveals finally happened this weekend! Since everyone was in town for my mom's 50th birthday, we knew this would be the perfect time to share the good news. Someone did ask me if I thought my Mom would be upset that we were "hijacking" her birthday. But I knew that this surprise would be well received!

We told my youngest sister, Lauren, on May 19th. She asked to stay at our house last minute on her way through town. I hid all the baby books & gifts that we had bought for our parents. But I still couldn't keep the secret! Rich & I decided spontaneously to tell her. She was definitely caught off guard, especially after just finishing her rotation in the NICU. Probably bad timing on our part.

So we thought it was only fair to tell my other sister, Ashley, before my parents too. On the way to dinner Saturday night, Rich & I told Ashley we needed to talk to her. I just LOVED her reaction!

We had a 7:30 dinner reservation at The Melting Pot (yum!) However, that meant we didn't get home until almost 11:30! At that point, I couldn't wait any longer to share the news. I wrangled everyone into the kitchen (which took a lot of work!) and finally got Mom to open her gift. Mom & Dad has awesome reactions too- I especially loved Mom's squealing!

It felt so great to finally be able to share and talk about our baby with family. Mom was definitely impressed that I kept the secret as long as I did! The rest of the long weekend was spent talking about baby things and other plans. Mom & I even made a trip to Buy Buy Baby just for fun.

Only 9 more days until we can finally tell Rich's parents (and our brother & sister-in-law). We cannot wait to get their reactions on camera as well!

"Education"

Even before becoming pregnant, I have struggled with anxiety and fear. Horrible, ridiculous thoughts have a way of creeping into my head and lingering for far too long. I would often find myself completely consumed with the darkness and worry that flooded my mind. So it makes sense that Satan would continue to use this sin issue into pregnancy- although now, it's as if he has cranked up the dial to max. Uh oh.

I'm also a big reader. I love to plan. Gather information. Educate myself. I don't like feeling unprepared or surprised. So I read books. I have read books on being a Christian in college, being single, dating, marriage, wedding planning, sex & relationships, friendship, and managing your money- just to name a few.

So naturally, I have like 4 or 5 pregnancy books around the house right now. And lets not forget the internet, which is always a wealth of information.

However, I realized yesterday that in my efforts to educate myself, I was really working myself into a complete panic. Somehow I stumbled upon some heartbreaking blog of a woman who's baby had some awful birth defect. The baby was horribly disfigured, and only lived a few hours after he was born. It was so, so devastating. But like an idiot, I kept reading. And then I was left with my thoughts for the rest of the day. Trouble.

I shared this with Richard, as well as a few trusted friends. And they each agreed to help hold me accountable. Another encouraged me to memorize a verse or passage of scripture to pray over our baby for these next several months. I loved the idea, and I am going to do my best to memorize Psalm 139.

There are some fears that I have, deep in my heart, that I am too afraid to even say out loud. I don't even want to tempt fate--which I KNOW is a completely ridiculous thought. Sometimes I try to pray for every single possible outcome, for fear that if I don't, something bad will happen. I try to cover all my bases. But, I know that the Lord will not allow illness or birth defects due to MY lack of prayer. The fact is, I need to just take myself out of the equation all together.

Does this even make sense to anyone? Or am I just rambling?

Either way, when I am calm and rational, I know these things to be true:

-The Lord already knows the little life that is growing inside me. He knows baby's birthday. Name. Hair color. Shoe size. Everything. The Lord knows it all.

-The Lord already has plans for that little life. He knows how long our precious one with live. He knows where he/she will go to college. He knows if he/she will eventually get married one day. And His plans are already set.

-The Lord loves my child, even more than I do. Even now, having not even met my baby yet, the Lord completely adores him/her. He knows his/her every thought and word. And He will never stop.

Psalm 139
O Lord, you have searched me and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord.

You hem me in-behind and before;
you have laid your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,"
even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand.
When I awake, I am still with you.

If only you would slay the wicked, O God!
Away from me, you blood thirsty men!
They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.
Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord,
and abhor those who rise up against you?
I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

Keeping Secrets

I am just the worst at keeping secrets. I simply cannot do it. It's not because I like ruining surprises for other people- it's not from a malicious place, I assure you. I get too excited! It's why I can't buy Christmas or birthday presents more than a few days in advance. I just want to tell.

So you can imagine how difficult this week has been for me. I've basically been avoiding my Mom. I can't talk to her for more than a few minutes without feeling like I might slip and say something. Now I'm starting to become paranoid thinking, "She knows! She knows something is going on!"

I'm really excited about our plan to share the news with our families. Like I said in an earlier post, both my Mom & my mother-in-law have big birthdays in the next couple of weeks. My mom's birthday is this weekend (the 25th). The plan is to wait until everyone is home- Lauren gets into town on Friday & Ashley gets in on Saturday. I'm not sure when we're doing presents- maybe before our dinner out on Saturday, or maybe after dinner. Either way, we plan to give Mom our present last. We got her a sweet little receiving blanket & little yellow hat. I cannot wait to see the look on her face! I'm hoping Rich will be able to catch the reactions on his phone.

Just a few more days until I can share our secret!

Let's celebrate!

I've been known to be slightly dramatic at times. After we started trying, I promised myself I wouldn't go crazy analyzing every single potential pregnancy symptom. So when I started getting extremely tired during the day, I chalked it up to having 2 little boys living with us. When I started having sensitivity to smells, I wrote it off as being part of Spring arriving & having the house more open. {Warning: TMI coming- Dad, you might want to skip this part} But when my breasts starting hurting ALL THE TIME, I knew something might be up.

Before going to bed last night, I drank a big glass of water. I wanted to be "prepared" to take a pregnancy test when I woke up. Rich was getting ready for work, so I did my thing in the bathroom. I set the pregnancy test down on the counter, and went to grab some sweatpants. I wasn't even gone a minute, and the test already showed.....

WE'RE PREGNANT!!!

Rich & I only told a couple of close friends today. Let's be honest, I can't keep secrets so I knew I had to at least tell someone before our big reveal. Rich would probably have been fine keeping quiet.

It's still pretty early- I am probably only about 5-6 weeks along at this point. We have our first doctors appointment on June 6th with the ob/gyn I have seen since I was 17. She is wonderful, and I feel SO comfortable with her.

We are thankful that both of our Moms have big birthdays coming up in the next couple of weeks. I'm already working out plans for the moment we tell them they will be Grandparents. I can hardly wait for that moment! Hopefully we'll be able to get it on video so that we can post it on here later.

We're both so excited & thankful for this tremendous blessing in our lives. I cannot wait to meet our little one!

Documenting Pregnancy

I've seen a lot of pregnancy blogs, and most of them have cute ways of documenting the many milestones of pregnancy. I love this idea, because of how special it will be to look back on once our little one is here. Plus, it gives more than just a weekly photo of "the bump". I am a big journaler (sp?) so I am all about this idea. I've been looking over some of my favorites, and the journal entries that I like the most are:

How far along?
Total weight gain:
Maternity clothes?
Stretch marks?
Sleep:
Best moment this week:
Miss Anything?
Movement:
Food cravings:
Anything making you queasy or sick:
Gender:
Labor Signs:
Symptoms:
Belly Button in or out?
Wedding rings on or off?
Happy or Moody most of the time:
Looking forward to:

{found at www.littlebabygarvin.blogspot.com}
~And yes, I will borrow her journal layout just as I borrow her blog title. Shut up.~

The other one I really like is......

How far along:
Baby's size:
Total weight gain:
Maternity Clothes:
Sleep:
Food cravings:
Food aversions:
Symptoms I HAVE:
Doctor’s Appointment:
Movement:
Belly Button:
Gender:
Best moment of the week:
What I’m looking forward to:
What I miss:
What else?

I am also really excited for the bump pictures. Like, REALLY excited. But I'll be honest, thinking of waiting 9 months seems like a super long time. I'm sure it will go quickly, but I am just so ready to be a mom. I can't wait.

Why wait?

Nobody gets more excited than me to talk about babies. Just ask my sweet husband! I get all excited and goofy when he asks me what I'm thinking about, knowing that my answer is most often "babies". I can entertain my own little thoughts all day long, but it's something else entirely when Rich brings up the topic! I know right now that he is going to be an incredible Dad. I know that it's going to be hard and stretching is SO many ways that I'm not even aware of yet, but I know in my heart that we are meant to be parents.

So we've had this whole "June 2012" date in the back of our heads for a while now. There were reasons behind it, but Rich has been hesitant to put things on a timeline all along. He is a lot more go-with-the-flow than I am, that is for sure. The other night, we had finished working out at the gym and were relaxing in the hot tub. Out of NOWHERE, Rich says to me, "Why don't we just start trying now?"

SAY WHAT???

I couldn't even believe the words coming out of his mouth. I was so surprised! While Rich is certainly excited to be a Dad some day, I certainly have more, shall we say, enthusiasm. We talked about it a little more, and Rich had some really good points. Basically, it's not up to us when we get pregnant. The Lord already knows if/when it will happen. So it doesn't really matter if we start trying now or 2 months from now. It will happen on His terms, not ours.

So....as much as I absolutely hate this phrase....we're trying!!!
